Solo Mio (2026)
Summary
SOLO MIO is a new rom-com from Angel Studios starring Kevin James, Nicole Grimaudo, Kim Coates, Alyson Hannigan, and Jonathan Roumie. Left at the altar and saddled with a comprehensive Italian honeymoon tour package he can’t get a refund for, fourth grade art teacher Matt Taylor decides to see Italy for himself, grieving the relationship he lost. With the help of two unlikely — and somewhat unwanted — new friends, Matt’s solo tour of Italy comes with more than he bargained for.
Assessment
SOLO MIO is one of the highest-quality movies produced by Angel Studios to date. Taking inspiration from the golden days of rom-coms, this movie combines wit and romance with effortless ease. The writing is tight, with every scene and line of dialogue furthering the plot or characters in some way. The characters themselves are all unique, dynamic, and perfectly cast, playing off of one another with hilarious, snappy dialogue. The cinematography was a little dark and dramatic for a classic rom-com, but it carried the story well and there was obvious quality and care that went into the making of the movie.
In terms of cleanliness, the movie is incredibly clean — especially when compared to today’s rom-coms — with only a little bit of cussing (perhaps 3-4 words in the whole movie and nothing like an f-bomb) and some slight innuendo that will likely fly over the heads of most younger audience members. The focus of the story is definitely on the romance and relationship, rather than physical intimacy. At most, the movie depicts some light kissing.

Talk
Oh my goodness, that movie was an absolute delight. I was legitimately laughing out loud throughout the entire thing (between strong bouts of pity for poor Matt and a few moments of “awhhhhh how sweet”). It was funny, it was smart, it was human, it was well-crafted, and I immediately wanted to watch it again as soon as the credits started rolling. It is, I would say, the best rom-com that I am aware of to come out in the past ten years, if not longer. And I think a huge part of this success boils down to two things:
The characters.
The movie’s focus.
Between the spectacular dialogue and superb acting, the characters come to life in the best way possible. They never gave off the impression they were just rom-com archetypes — even the side characters who struck me as tastefully caricature-ish. I felt that both Matt and Gia were very well-developed and established characters, even in the very beginning of the movie (particularly the irrepressible and delightful Gia). The characters felt like real people, not social media cardboard cutouts or the “modern ideal”.
Side note: I loved how the movie handled the slight language barrier between Matt and Gia, which I think helped them seem more real. They had miscommunications that
The second part of this movie’s success is that it wasn’t focused on physical intimacy. That sounds like a weird thing to say, but it’s absolutely true. Most rom-coms nowadays seem like they are trying too much to be edgy or shocking; focusing on how quickly they can shuffle off the main characters to bed or how many inappropriate jokes they can make in two hours. SOLO MIO, in stark contrast, focuses on the romance. That building of a connection between two very different people through all the little, tender moments that the genre’s mainstream entries seem to have forgotten. this made it a breath of fresh air when it comes to the romantic movie genre as a whole and made me love it even more.
Also, this is a little off-topic, but this is the first Angel Studios movie I’ve seen that doesn’t have any of the weird editing some of their previous movies have had. This one flowed smoothly from start to finish and I’m super excited to see how their future movies look!
