Assessment
Potter Knows Best is a sweet and wholesome picture book with an excellent heart towards its audience. With a message that focuses not only on the fact that God makes each human unique and with a specific purpose in mind, but that each person also has both a growth and sanctification process to go through. The story sets an excellent theological example for life as a Christian; not merely stopping at “God created you uniquely” as many Christian messages tend to do, but going a step further and presenting the idea that He not only creates, He also designs and equips for a specific purpose
The two areas where the book struggles slightly are the artwork — which is a little stiff and lifeless — and some of the writing. For the artwork, the style is quite adorable, with a lot of soft shapes and warm tones, however some of the character’s expressions are a bit blank. The writing is overall really good and digs into the topics the book covers with ease, but some of the words used and sentence structuring are a little more advanced than the audience the book seems to be marketed towards. This is not necessarily a huge issue in light of how valuable the message is (and being a little more advanced means the book is perfect for a parent or grandparent to read to the child).

Talk
Every so often, I am delighted and amazed at the theological depth a piece of Christian media brings to the world. There is such a trend of theological shallowness in a lot of mainstream Christian stories that having one that delves a little more deeply into themes of Scripture and elements than are important to Christian life is not just refreshing, but highly encouraging. Potter Knows Best is one such book.
Christian kids’ fiction tends to lean towards the very basics, understandably so. You don’t want to overwhelm the little minds with a whole lot of big, theological concepts or questions, but sometimes that means cutting out all the Scriptural meat from the message. Potter Knows Best does a great job of presenting a more complete picture of what it means to be uniquely and wonderfully created by God. How He has created us each for a very specific purpose and is active in preparing and shaping us for it.
Overall I definitely liked the book and it’s message. The artwork is the one area I did not enjoy as much, but that is due to a lot of my own personal taste and art preferences. It still is very warm and inviting, with a style that is both cute and soft.
