Logos: Bible Trading Card Game

Summary

Logos is a trading card game by Ktizo Games that has a solid Biblical foundation worked into both its cards and its mechanics. Complex enough to be interesting, but simple enough to be easy to pick up, this game boasts the fun of greats such as Magic the Gathering and Yu-Gi-Oh while utilizing Biblical figures and events in an interconnected web of gameplay.

Assessment

Logos is a Scripture-themed trading card game utilizing unique, cooperative mechanics and a rich understanding of Scripture. The game pits players against the forces and figures of darkness from across the Bible, armed with heroes of the faith and other various helper cards. Using discrete rounds, players must claim victory by cleaning evil from various Scriptural locations or be defeated.

This game offers a surprisingly robust theological message, as players navigate card interactions and gameplay. Logos offers the opportunity to look at various aspects of the Bible through a new perspective. The game operates on a web of Scriptural connections that demonstrates a deep and respectful understanding of the source material.

In terms of cleanliness, some of the artwork for the villains and the Shadow cards may be a little dark or scary, but nothing to grotesque or graphic. The artwork is incredibly clean in terms of any sexualization and there are no adult themes in the base game.

Talk

Ang, how can a trading card game score a 7 out of 7 on the Theological Message scale??

Okay, here me out: this card game actually does a really, really great job of metaphorically describing how interconnected the entirety of the Bible is. We know that the Bible not only references itself accurately and repeatedly across millennia of stories and oral traditions, but that events from previous eras impact later events. For example, the whole thing with Jacob and Esau vying for the love of their father morphing into the Israel and the Edomites’ strained relationship later in the New Testament. The echoes between King David and Jesus, ramifications of Moses and the Israelites not wiping out the Amalekites, prophecies about John the Baptist and Mary and so on and so forth. Due to its very mechanics, this game mixes and matches events of the Bible and puts on full display the fact that Scripture is a tapestry woven across time, not a purely linear story.

In addition to this, cards that are connected within the Bible do interact directly with one another, sometimes in ways that are Scripturally or historically accurate, but not immediately intuitive. I love the potential this game has to start Biblical conversations. Watching how the cards interact with each other directly and indirectly, trying to puzzle out strategies and plays to reach the end goal can provide a really great, Scripture-focused intellectual challenge. And, even if you’re not playing necessarily for a meatier theological discussion, the gameplay is pretty fun and there’s a satisfactory element of good vs. evil.

The gameplay is a little tricky to get into if you’re not very familiar with trading card games; I feel like the instructions could be polished a just bit, but it’s not a dealbreaker by any means. The game is not as complicated as some (I have some modern Yu-Gi-Oh experience), but is unique enough that it stands out as “not just another” trading card game. I also like the fact that it is a co-op game; while having the challenge of taking on another player is a lot of fun, I think the cooperative element works far more in this game’s favor. We are, after all, on the same side as brothers and sisters in Christ, looking to do good, be diligent, and make good choices for the Body of Christ.

Overall, I do really love this game and the theological message it carries through gameplay. Absolutely check it out if you or someone in your family enjoys trading card games!
